Travel Writing

Towards the end of Chapter 6 of Riding the Magic Carpet the character 'Ed' (aka Stuart Butler) says he is planning a trip to Panama's Darien Gap, and then Colombia - before trying to persuade Tom to come with him instead of going to J-Bay.

Things never quite turn out as planned, and several seasons later, post-J-Bay, Stuart's trip did go ahead. However, the Darien Gap became Cuba. Tom and Breige accompanied Stuart on the Colombia leg of the trip, as Breige describes in this ARTICLE which appeared in the August issue of Surf Girl magazine...

While you're there, why not also read Stuart's own account of the same Orkneys trip that inspired Chapter 2 of Riding the Magic Carpet?

And, speaking of Scotland, you can also click HERE to read an article Tom penned for Wavelength magazine following another trip to some of the islands West of the mainland, complete with pics. There's also a further link to a video of the same trip.

Wanted to go to PERU AND ECUADOR? Click to read about a recent trip through the Andes and to the world's longest wave...

Closer to home for most of us, click HERE to read about Tom's 2006 ride through France and Spain with the Santa Cruz surf team of Matt & Ford Archbold, Shawn Barron and Matt Schrodetz...
