Bit difficult to know where to start with a links page. This one’s going to be the more professionally orientated of the two pages. Anything related to music, arts, writing etc can be found on Other Nonsense.
I suppose a good enough place to start with a surf related website would be with surf related links. So why not check out the Welsh Coast Surf Club, Porthcawl Malibu Club and Surf Academy for my top three surfing organisations – the first two are great if you’re after a beer or participation in contests, while the latter is an ideal place to learn.
Elsewhere in the surf world, if you need a brand new custom surfboard then there’s only one place to look. Visit Luke Young Shapes right now! This guy is the man when it comes to the fine craft of surfboard making, and has never shaped me a bad one to date. When he answers the phone to you shout ‘safe’, and he’ll be knocking money off your tariff by the minute!
There are plenty of good surf photographers I should link you to. Try Alex Lewis’s www.taith.com for a start. Alex is working on a book for Seren Publishers Ltd about the history of Welsh Surfing – so keep your eyes peeled for that title when it’s finished. Once you’re done there you might want to see Peter Price’s shots too – I used to work covert surveillance operations with this guy, but you can read about that in a future book. I can also highly recommend Stu Norton, Peter Britton, Ester Spears, and Gareth Phillips
Away from stills, the finest videographer in my area is Tim Davies , whose website includes some coverage of the Santa Cruz Tour I did in June ’06. Tim’s upcoming film Step Into the Realm will be a must see for the next year. Crossover filmmaker and photographer Mark Lumsden is worth a look too. His film Cold Rush is the best portrayal of Scottish surfing you’re likely to see for decades. One more honourable mention goes to ‘Ed’ from Ch 2 of Riding the Magic Carpet, who’s real name, if you’ve browsed this site much, you will by now know to be Stuart Butler. Stuart is as silly a travel journalist, photog, filmmaker as you’ll ever meet. His site covers our trips to the Orkneys and Colombia, among the many hundreds of others the nutter has taken in recent years. He’s also now starting up a set of guided tours to some of the planet’s most un-visitable regions – again detailed on his site. Last I saw him he asked if I wanted to be guide on either the Southern Indian or Western African tours – I’ll get back to you soon Stu! Most of the above are now supplying copy or shots to the new Welsh national surf magazine Tonnau the success of which is going to be a great development in moving Welsh surfing forward. So click, and subscribe today – it’s only a tenner for SIX issues delivered to your doorstep.
As time goes by, I will be adding tons of links to this page, so keep dropping in to see what’s new.
